Knitting Repair Help Needed

8/13/2019

We received a plea for help to repair a sweater that was ordered from London.

"I ordered a sweater from Wrap London and the finishing at the bottom at the neckline is really not done well and I'm wondering if you could repair it? I hate to return it!"

If you can help, please contact us and we will put you in touch.

June Meeting Recap - DYING!

7/1/2019

With apologies for the mixup, last month we reported that Sam L would be teaching a class on felting. In fact, there was a miscommunication and it turned out to be a class on tabletop dyeing with animal fibers.

This lesson applies to animal fibers (aka protein fibers), including wool, alpaca, and silk. Basically, if it came off an animal, as well as the nylon in some sock yarns, you can dye it with acid dyes. Acid dye means simply a mild acid, such as 5% white vinegar or citric acid. For Kool-Aid dyeing, which Sam demonstrated, the citric acid in the mix is all you need.

Special project - child lovie repair

6/3/2019

WCKG recently received a request from a parent who need help in repairing a child's well-loved toy.

If you can help, please email
WCKG and we will connect you with the parent.
I was referred to you in hopes of connecting with someone who could help with a special repair for a long-time lovie belonging to my nine-year-old.  She has had it since her first birthday and it is very loved and literally hanging on by a few threads!

I have this idea of removing the remaining filling of the original and rehoming it inside of a duplicate, then refilling and stitching back up with the name (“Green Baby”) knit into the “scar” post-op.  OR slightly more complicated, I assume, would be do do the same thing, but use the original head and the donor doll body.

In either case, this is well beyond my abilities and I would be thrilled to compensate for the project directly or via a donation to your group.

The donor doll is in storage so I am not able to send a picture of it or the original, the smaller 12” pictured below is the same, just a different color.

Lastly, I would not be looking for a perfect restoration, that would not be realistic. I’m simply trying to preserve the spirit of a special childhood toy for a few more years of snuggling with a sweet and sentimental child.

Many thanks in advance for any help or guidance!

MRI Maakers: Raising Funds for the Shetland MRI Scanner Appeal

6/3/2019

The Shetland MRI Scanner Appeal is raising money to bring an MRI scanner to the Shetland islands. Over 600 patients from Shetland must travel south to have an MRI scan each year. MRI diagnostics are used to diagnose and monitor a wide variety of conditions and the number of patients who need them is steadily increasing.

Harriet Middleton designed Harriet’s Hat as part of the fundraising effort, and it has been a huge hit with knitters in Shetland and here in the US. Having had to travel from Shetland to the UK mainland every 3 months over 2 years for a scan, she knows first hand how beneficial the islands having their own scanner will be. That is what inspired her to use her knitting to draw the community together to support it. Not only is this a chance to support a great cause, it’s also a truly beautiful hat.

You can purchase just the pattern or kits in several colorways directly from MRI Maakers. There are also links on the site to purchase the kit from several US yarn shops.

Pattern may be purchased here for £4.00 (via paypal)

May Meeting Recap

6/3/2019

Lynette Swanson, of Northbrook’s Three Bags Full, attended our May meeting along with her assistant. They gave us a brief overview of their shop and history, showed us some lovely knit objects, and brought in samples of Isager yarn for everyone to try out.

Isager yarn is a Danish company that Lynette and her customers just love. It is comes in a variety of weights that are well suited to mixing together and combining in projects. Many of us were glad to learn more about this new yarn, while other members shared firsthand experience—like Hannah’s shawl in this month’s Show & Share.

April Meeting Recap

4/30/2019

At our April meeting we all got a lesson mosaic knitting. Rosie P brought in her copy of Barbara Walker’s book on mosaic knitting along with printed charts and instructions. After a short discussion, guild members got out their yarn and needles to try it out. By the time our meeting was over, a few people had swatches that were pretty far along. We hope to see some finished projects at Show & Share over the next few months.  See the current newsletter for more information on mosaic knitting resources and patterns.  Current newsletters are available to WCKG members only.  Not a member?  Join today!

We also discussed charity knitting and topics for future meetings.

Sam will be able to teach her popular dyeing class at the Welles Park Clubhouse, so stay tuned for more information as we decide on the right month for a class
