Member Biography: Stacy Weber

When did you first start knitting/why?

About 1 ½ years ago…I was bored one weekend and bought a kids’ knitting kit at Meijer so I could learn.

Who taught you to knit?

That kids’ knitting kit didn’t help much…it was so confusing! I don’t know how a youngster would have understood it. I taught myself mostly, but I had my husband learn along with me so he could explain things that didn’t make sense to me. He gave up on knitting, but I’m still teaching myself plenty!

Do you have a knitting philosophy, and what is it. What helped you form your philosophy?

Busy hands make for a calm mind. That goes for most activities, not just knitting! When my hands are busy doing something, my mind tends to relax and get a bit Zen-like.

What is your very favorite knitting book and why?

Oh, I have so many! I really like the KnitGrrl books because there are cute projects with easy-to-understand instructions. Especially for the newbies like me! What projects are you working on now? I coach a high school color guard, and I’m knitting a scarf for everyone on the team as an end-of-the-season gift. I have one more to go!

What is the best thing you ever knit?

I was, and still am, very proud of the first scarf I ever knit. It was 100% alpaca in burgundy, forest green and gray-green blocks. I gave it to my sister-in-law. I recently ran into her at the grocery store—and she was wearing it! I was very excited!

What is the worst thing you ever knit?

Hmm…there are a lot of those…but each mistake I make is good practice for the next success.

Why do you like to knit?

So many reasons! I love the calmness it brings to my life. I love that I can make something with my own two hands. I love using the skills I learn to create something of use for others. And I really love shopping for new yarn and patterns!

When do you knit?

Mostly in the evening and during lunch hours. I try to knit anytime I can.

What is your favorite part of the knitting process?

Since I’m still somewhat new at knitting, I love the moment that I finally figure out how to complete that new skill I’ve been working on. Also, casting off on a project that has taken me a while or is extra-special feels really good!
