Member Biography: Sarah Rouse
When did you first start knitting/why?
I started knitting last summer. It’s hard to say why. It could have been the lure of all the gorgeous fiber in pretty little yarn shops; it could have been that my creative “flair” desperately needed an outlet; it could be that I never find the unique clothing that I want, and I need to design my own. Whatever it was, I’m addicted now!
Who taught you to knit?
Me!
Do you knit English/American style, German/Continental style, backwards?I am now most comfortable knitting in the Continental style, except that I find it easier to “throw” the yarn (English) when doing complex stitch patterns.
Do you have a knitting philosophy, and what is it. What helped you form your philosophy?
Knitting should never be tedious. If something isn’t turning out the way that you had hoped (and it’s the fault of the design,) don’t be afraid to frog everything and use that precious yarn for something you enjoy making.
Have you ever taught someone to knit?
Yes – I got my mom to start knitting again after thirty years. And I’m teaching a co-worker.
What is your very favorite knitting book and why?
I have way too many already. I guess the most useful has been Vogue Knitting: A Complete Guide. I also love the Rowan books.
What projects are you working on now?
A sweater of my own design.
What is your very favorite yarn?
I don’t have a favorite!
What is the best thing you ever knit?
Well, I don’t have that much to show, yet. But I love the doggy sweater I made for my dog.
What is the worst thing you ever knit?
I don’t keep things that don’t satisfy me.
Why do you like to knit?
I think it’s a combination of the tactile quality of the craft, and the limitless possibilities of design.
When do you knit?
Just about every evening; on my lunch breaks sometimes; on trips.
What is your favorite part of the knitting process?
When you’ve learned a stitch pattern, and you can just go without laboring over it. Also, there is something satisfying about aspects of seaming. I actually like to do it.
How long have you been knitting?
Six months.
What do you like about our guild?
like to know what is going on in the community. Unfortunately, I have not made it to any meetings yet. But I *have* enjoyed the discount, and I keep an eye on all the upcoming events.
Do you engage in other Fiber Arts?
Crochet, and I am teaching myself to sew and quilt.
