Member Biography: Nan Krull

Who taught you to knit?

I learned much of it from books, but my grandmother helped when I’d get stuck.

Do you knit English/American style, German/Continental style, backwards? Left-handed? Eastern cross method? Peruvian-style? please describe.

American, Continental, and backwards Do you have a knitting philosophy, and what is it.

What helped you form your philosophy?

Have fun with it! Take a chance, try something new or different. Knit what you like, not what others think you should do.

Have you ever taught someone to knit?

Yes – used to teach Montessori students.

What is your very favorite knitting book and why?

“Knitting in Plain English”, Maggie Righetti, because it’s the most clear, plain-spoken explanation of knitting techniques I’ve ever seen.

Do you knit for a living/have your own business? Tell us about it.

I’d like to start knitting for a business, but am not there yet.

What projects are you working on now?

A modular baby blanket backed in a light polar fleece, with the edge knitted on through both the blanket and fleece layers. I’m also doing some things with felted bowls.

What is the best thing you ever knit?

The current baby blanket

Why do you like to knit?

It helps me center and gives me a creative outlet while producing something beautiful and useful.

When do you knit?

Anytime there is a chance. It’s difficult to carve out sufficient time, but I always carry a project.

What do you like about our guild?

You bring in excellent speakers in the field of knitting.

Do you engage in other Fiber Arts?

I’ve done a little sewing, needlepoint, and embroidery before finding knitting.
