Member Biography: Lynne Wiora
When did you first start knitting/why?
I started knitting in June of 2004 because I had been laid off the previous January. I was going a bit crazy, so I just picked up Stitck ‘n Bitch: The Knitter’s Handbook from Borders, some Lion Brand Jiffy, and US size 8 metal Boye needles.
Who taught you to knit?
I taught myself.
Do you knit English/American style, German/Continental style, backwards? Left-handed? Eastern cross method? Peruvian-style? please describe.
I knit English/American style, but am working on learning German/Continental and backwards.
Do you have a knitting philosophy, and what is it. What helped you form your philosophy?
I don’t think I really have a knitting philosophy. I just tackle projects that look interesting or like something I would like to wear. I’ve never felt that I couldn’t do something. I just look through my books, check out info online, and go for it.
Have you ever taught someone to knit?
I’ve only tried to teach one person and it didn’t really work out, but she did end up learning from someone at the Stitch Salon that was downtown during the Winter of 2007.
What is your very favorite knitting book and why?
Right now, it’s Fitted Knits due to the simple fact that I want to knit at least 75% of the projects in the book for myself right this moment. I’ve always loved Stefanie Japel’s designs and am thrilled to have so many new patterns to choose from.
What projects are you working on now?
Too many. I’m waiting for my blocking board so that I can block Ene’s Scarf. Aside from that, I have a Gusseted Floor Cushion from Last-Minute Knitted Gifts, Mystery Stole #3, my first Laburnum Sock from Sensational Knitted Socks, a shawl based on Trellis & Vine, the Provincial Waistcoat from the Winter 2006 issue of Interweave Knits, and a crazy stash-busting scarf on the needles.
What is the best thing you ever knit?
I’d say Shedir from Knitty, but I think most people who have seen my knitting would say Butterfly from Rowan 37.
What is the worst thing you ever knit?
Cleo from Knitty.com. It did not fit me well at all.
Why do you like to knit?
For a million reasons. It calms me (usually) and makes me more patient. I love picking out new projects and checking out new yarns. I love the process of not being sure where a project will take me and figuring things out as I go. I love having something at the end that I made. I think I love everything except for finding a bunch of knots in a skein of yarn and pattern errors.
When do you knit?
Whenever I can: while waiting for the bus/El, riding bus/El, waiting in line, in the car, watching TV.
How long have you been knitting?
Since June of 2004, so just over 3 years.
What do you like about our guild?
Not sure yet, since I just joined. J However, I am enjoying the LYS and book reviews in the newsletters.
Do you engage in other Fiber Arts?
I’m working on learning how to spin (spindle) and daydreaming about buying a wheel. I also keep telling myself I’m going to learn to crochet. Maybe during my next vacation.
