Member Biography: Katie Ferry

When did you first start knitting/why?

I started in September, 2008. I thought it would be cool to learn. I wanted to knit my boyfriend a scarf for Christmas, but I quickly became addicted. Now I cannot live a day without my knitting needles. I've rearranged my whole life around knitting!

Katie

Who taught you to knit?

I learned to knit on YouTube.

Do you knit English/American style, German/Continental style, backwards? Left-handed? Eastern cross method? Peruvian-style? please describe.

I knit American style. I do have plans to learn Continental because it's faster.

Do you have a knitting philosophy, and what is it. What helped you form your philosophy?

I am the FROG QUEEN. I will rip out an entire project if every stitch is not perfect. "Never be afraid of ripping out your work; you will always regret not fixing it."

Have you ever taught someone to knit?

Yes! I taught my friend Erin to knit the day after I first learned. We now get together for weekly Knit Nights and trips to the local yarn store. I also taught my boyfriend, but he told me not to tell anyone he knits. Shhh! It will be our little secret!

What is your very favorite knitting book and why?

I can't pick just one! I love all of my knitting books for their inspiration and their beauty. My most vital is The Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques by Nancie M. Wiseman. I could not finish a project without it!

Do you knit for a living/have your own business? Tell us about it.

I do have a website on Etsy; www.debonairechicago.com, where I hope to sell some of my knits online, but my dream would be to own a yarn store.

What projects are you working on now?

I am working on a bagful of socks, a hat, 2 scarves, a shrug, 2 dog sweaters, etc.

What is your very favorite yarn?

I love the entire line of Malabrigo yarns. The stitch definition and colors are gorgeous and it's great to work with.

What is the best thing you ever knit?

Probably my sister's earflap hat. It was the first thing I ever knit without a pattern, so it took a lot of time. It turned out exactly how she wanted it.

What is the worst thing you ever knit?

My boyfriend's scarf. It was the first thing I ever knit and it has lots of stray ends sticking up all over and there are a lot of mistakes, because when I made them, I didn't know how to fix them. I will go back and finish it better for him one day. He still proudly wears it, despite its imperfections.

Why do you like to knit?

I love the therapeutic feeling of the needles and yarn. I love the thrill of overcoming a challenging pattern. I love creating beautiful knits and sharing them with the world.

When do you knit?

Everywhere. I knit at home, at work, while I'm driving, on the train, at dinner, at the movies, pretty much anywhere I can get away with it.

What is your favorite part of the knitting process?

The creation and the community.

How long have you been knitting?

Less than a year (since September 2008).

What do you like about our guild?

Everyone is so friendly and talented. At my first meeting, I was so nervous, because I really did not know what to expect. But when I entered the auditorium and saw so many knitters of all different ages sitting and knitting together while they listened to the speaker, my nerves turned to excitement. I could not sit down and whip out my own needles fast enough! It was my first time seeking out other knitters and I felt like I belonged the moment I entered the room. The knitters are so inspiring and they have so much good advice, I wish we met once a week instead of once a month!

Do you engage in other Fiber Arts?

I am slowly learning to crochet. I really want to learn how to spin, but I am afraid that when I do, the yarn stash will explode into massive quantities.
