May Monthly Program
Yarn Swap

Tuesday May 20, 2008
Sulzer Regional Library, IL

Yarn Swap - Unload Your Unloved Yarn and Possibly Take Some Home
WCKG Program for May Meeting

It is time for spring cleaning! What this means for your yarn stash, is that this is the time to go through your yarn and pull out the skeins (or partial skeins) that you don't think that you will ever use. Because we cannot sell things or exchange money at the library, this is not really a "swap." You will not be swapping directly with another member for yarn of equal value. Instead, it should be thought of primarily as a way to donate yarn to charity. Any unwanted yarn that is left on the swap table at the end of the night will be donated to charity. That being said, you will have the chance to take home yarn that other people brought, if you find something that you want to add to your stash.

This scale is designed to assign a points value worth approximately half the price of the yarn when new. So, if you know how much you paid for the yarn, you can mark a points value of half of the price. For example, if I paid $5 for a skein, I would mark it as 2.5 points. If you donate books or patterns or knitting needles, then this same rule would apply (mark it as half the original price). Alternatively, you can use the following rough scale to mark the points on your yarn.

Type of Yarn Appox. Weight per Skein Points value
Thick and medium (aran, worsted, bulky, novelty, sport, Shetland) 50 grams 3
Fine (fingering sock) 50 grams 4
Superfine (lace) 50 grams 5
Acrylic 50 grams 1
Rare or expensive (cashmere, angora, silk, handspun) 50 grams 6

We are planning to donate left over yarn and materials to the following charities:
Sarah's Circle, Howard Brown Health Center, Crafty Angels, and for use for WCKG programs involving teaching knitting (including Polly E. Cotton installations).
