Weekend Workshops with
Lucy Neatby

Lucy Neatby is the author of two books, Cool Socks Warm Feet, and Taking the Chequered Flag: Finishing in Style, a boatload of knitting DVDs, and has written numerous patterns and articles for knitting magazines. Lucy, a former Merchant Naval Officer, is the owner of a mail-order company called Tradewind Knitwear Designs (www.tradewindknits.com) specializing in selling Canadian yarns (including her own Celestial Merino) and her own patterns. Lucy's warm personality and original teaching style make her one of the most popular teachers in North America. Lucy is a popular teacher with Windy City Knitting guild so we encourage you to register immediately because we believe these workshops will fill to capacity fast.

Workshop Info

Class #1: Scarf Trio
Friday, June 13 from 9:00 to 4:30 P.M. (Evanston Ecology Center
6 hours.   $75 WCKG Members / $85 Non-Members
Skill level: Intermediate. Class Size: 15 students.

Pick one of three great scarf patterns designed by Lucy (or sample all three)! Mirror Mirror uses double-knitting to combine contrasting yarns in a reversible chequerboard pattern; Falling Leaves is an elegant design based on a repeating texture pattern; Sea Lettuce uses short-rows to create a stylish ruffled scarf edged with picots.

Over the course of the day, Lucy will guide you through yarn and needle selection for each project, then give instruction in the many and various techniques involved in each, and launch you on your chosen project.

Techniques covered will include: I-cord cast-on, elegant increases, Modified Conventional Bind-off, picots, short-rows, working from the right needle to the left (aka knitting-back backwards), Provisional Crochet cast-on, two-colour double knitting and more!

Class #2: Diamond Beaded Bracelet

3 hours.  $46.50 WCKG Members / $51.50 Non-Members
Skill level: Experienced Beginner Upward Class Size: 20 students.      

Try a number of beading techniques including tricks and tips for threading pre-strung beads and handling tiny needles while making an attractive bracelet. The bracelet will be well on its way to completion by the end of class.

Class #3 The Emperor's New Workshop
Saturday, June 14, 2008, - 1:30 P.M. to 4:30 P.M.   (Evanston Ecology Center
3 hours.    $37.50 WCKG Members / $42.50 Non-Members
Skill level: Intermediate/Experienced. Class size: 20 students.

We will begin with a swatch of the Emperors new fabric - a fine filigree of knitted strands framing carefully worked medallions of . . . . air. From this point forward, there is no official agenda - we will explore those knitting questions and conundrums that you have always wanted to ask in a workshop but that have never fit into the topics allotted.

Class #4 Quick Felted Mini-Bags
Sunday, June 15, 2008, - 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.   (Evanston Ecology Center
6 hours.    $75 WCKG Members / $85 Non-Members
Skill level: Novice/Intermediate. Class size: 20 students.

We will make one (or possibly more) small bags in class and complete the felting process. The bag designs offered are: The Origami Bag (use s a single piece of yarn from start to finish), Long Tall Sally, knit widthwise, or the Mini-Mitered worked from the edge with mitered corners. All designs are adaptable to larger versions should you wish to experiment later. You may choose the method of construction and patterning to suit your knitting experience. A variety of techniques including provisional edges and applied I-cords will be covered according to the bag you select. We will look at the possibilities for embellishments and fastenings; and how to choose yarns for felting, achieving reliable results and felting your finished product.
