Cheat Sheet for the Adult Surprise Jacket

1. Get Spun Out #1 Elizabeth Zimmermann's Adult Surprise Jacket the loose leaf pattern or from her book.

2. Choose the yarn and needle you will be using to knit the jacket. Knit a garter stitch swatch, you can not skip this part. This step will help determine your cast on number.

3. Measure a sweater left to right not around. (21 inches)
If you do measure around divide the measurement by 2. (42 inches divided by 2 = 21 inches)

4. Measure your swatch (number need to be exact even if a decimal is needed).

5. Take the width of your sweater number (21) and multiply it by your gauge number (say 5 stitches to the inch). That would look like (21 x 5 = 105). Divide the result by 3 to get your Key number (105 / 3 = 35) (35 is your key number). Now Multiply key number [K] 35 by 9 (35 x 9 = 315).

6. Cast on 315 stitches.
